Solar thermal energy is a mature technology that has undergone a significant advance in the last years. Citizens’s growing interest, the reduction of collector prices and the support of regulations in the household sector in different countries has enabled a large increase of installed capacity at world level.
Bearing in mind the heat demand of the building sector, which accounts for nearly 35.3% of the final energy demand, the use of solar thermal energy represents one of the best proposals to cut back the use of conventional sources to generate heat and cold.
As of today, most of the solar collectors installed worldwide have a household application, the generation of sanitary hot water and heating; nevertheless, there are other applications hardly exploited but with a high potential: the systems coupled to industrial processes and air-conditioning systems.
To promote solar heating and cooling technologies, the project relies, on its European side, on the participation of the Solar Thermal Industry Association (ASIT), and Argentina, Chile and Mexico are the countries that will promote the said technologies.
