04Polygeneration

Start > Technology > Polygeneration

Polygeneration is a set of technologies that transform primary energy, either natural gas or other fuels, into final energy as useful thermal energy (heat/cold).

The main advantages of polygeneration are:

  • High efficiency, and therefore fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are lower than with conventional generation.
  • Fewer losses due to transport and distribution on the electric grid, as facilities are usually closer to the consumption point, which facilitates a better distributed generation.
  • An increase in the electric supply security and its service quality.

Even if polygeneration is a technology known for decades and shows a high efficiency rate, its high potential has hardly been made good use of. That is why the promotion of polygeneration technologies will be carried out in 4 out of the 5 countries taking part:

Spain’s Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) leads this work programme on the European side.
