One of the most relevant recent initiatives is the programme of renewable energies, with objectives set at 2,974 MW of wind energy capacity for the year 2015, 7,500 MW of hydroelectric energy capacity for the year 2013 and the National Programme of Biofuels. In the field of energy efficiency, the most important efforts that are being carried out are the National Programme for the Rational and Efficient Use of Energy (PRONURE).

The establishment of polygeneration and solar thermal technologies enables a cost-efficient and safe energy supply.
